The partnership

Ecotap and Last Mile Solutions have been working together since 2 November 2013, making it one of the longest-running partnerships in the European EV charging industry. What started as a platform relationship has grown into a series of industry firsts, spanning smart charging innovation, public infrastructure tenders, and regulatory compliance milestones.

Three landmark projects

1. BIOS Group — large-scale load balancing (2015)

In 2015, Ecotap and Last Mile Solutions partnered with the BIOS Group on a project that was genuinely unprecedented at the time: simultaneous charging of 64 electric vehicles — all Tesla Model S — using dynamic load balancing at scale.

The system was designed to make optimal use of the available grid capacity at all times, with the ability to assign priority to specific vehicles and rotate full-power charging where needed. It was the first time load balancing of this kind had been deployed at scale in Europe, and it laid the technical groundwork for the smart charging solutions both companies would go on to build.

2. Municipality of The Hague — five-year public tender

In 2019, a consortium of Ecotap, Last Mile Solutions, and Engie was awarded a five-year tender to install and operate public charging infrastructure across The Hague. The partnership brought together Ecotap’s hardware expertise, Last Mile Solutions’ platform and billing capabilities, and Engie’s energy services — a model that has since proven replicable across other Dutch municipalities.

3. Eichrecht certification — a world first

Perhaps the most significant milestone in the collaboration: Ecotap became the first charging station manufacturer in the world to receive the Baumusterprüfbescheinigung — the formal certification confirming full eichrecht compliance across all their public charging stations.

Eichrecht is the German legal framework for metrological accuracy in electricity measurement, requiring that every charging transaction is fair, transparent, and independently verifiable by the end user. Meeting it demands precision across both hardware and software.

Ecotap developed the certified hardware. Last Mile Solutions developed the software that made the charging station eichrecht-compliant end to end. The result: Ecotap’s customers are guaranteed a charging transaction that is fully auditable and legally watertight — anywhere the standard applies.

The results

  • Ecotap is now building 200+ charging stations per week, equipped with the latest e-mobility innovations
  • In 2019 alone, Ecotap’s network enabled more than 90 million kilometres driven on electricity
  • That translated to 20,160 tonnes of CO₂ saved in a single year
  • The eichrecht certification — a world first — positions Ecotap as the benchmark for compliance-grade public charging hardware in Europe
  • A decade-long platform partnership with Last Mile Solutions underpins Ecotap’s ability to scale without compromising on technical or regulatory standards

Why it works

The Ecotap and Last Mile Solutions collaboration succeeds because it combines complementary strengths: Ecotap’s engineering and manufacturing expertise in hardware, and Last Mile Solutions’ deep experience in the software, billing, and compliance layer that turns hardware into a commercially and legally viable charging network.

From the earliest load-balancing experiments in 2013 to eichrecht certification and multi-year municipal tenders, the partnership has consistently operated at the frontier of what’s possible in European EV charging infrastructure.
