What is Electrical Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)?

Suppliers of software for companies that provide charging station management services often refer to the abbreviation EVSE. What exactly does this abbreviation mean?

Electrical Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) refers to a connector used to charge 1 electric vehicle. In popular speech one ‘hangs the car on a charging station’, but professionals in the field of charging infrastructure prefer to talk about an Electric Vehicle (EV), charging location, charging station, charging point and connector. These terms were formulated by the EU Sustainable Transport Forum.

A charging location contains at least 1 charging station, 1 charging point and 1 connector. Each charging station can have one or more charging points. There may be one or more connectors at each charging station. So with an EVSE we are referring to the latter: the connector.
